Usual holding cell for reviews as they come in...

James Hunt, CBR: "Once again, “Phonogram” delivers a truly stunning single issue package that makes the most convincing case yet for the continued existence of the “floppy” format. If only every comic had as much work put into it as “Phonogram."

Seb Patrick, Comics Daily: "If you don’t want to read comics this good, why are you even reading them at all?"

Sarah Jaffe, Newsarama: “I relate to her, though she’s nasty and frightened and working as hard as she can to keep up with something shallow and silly to leave behind the person she was, the person who hurt. I want to know just how Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie got into the head of a woman stuck trying to stay as pretty as the pretty young things around her, clinging to a rock’n’roll youth that she’s losing fast because she cannot relate to the adult world she’s supposed to be part of.”

Rich Johnson, Bleeding Cool: "I really like Phonogram. It’s one of those comics you like, that’s like no other and that you don’t really expect anyone else to like apart from you and are suddenly surprised to find out how manyother people like it as well and before you know it, Edgar Wright Jr is making a movie of it and you’re going what the hell, did the paradigm of the universe suddenly shift while I was eating a packet of Bovril crisps."

Bless that Ron. And thanks!

To put it in the thread format...

Ron Richards, I-Fanboy: "Everyone should read this comic." Why? Becase I don't care if you like hip hop, folk music, classical, pop or whatever genre of music. That's not the point. It doesn't matter if you never heard of The Knife or Elastica. But the feeling I get from reading this comic is one that is visceral and quite real and I hope that by reading it, you can share even a shard of it. Because, to me, that is what living feels like and no one should miss out on that." - Pick of the Week.

Also, more reviews!

Justin, 13 minutes: "Even if you don’t enjoy Phonogram, the industry needs more comics like it, the ones that push the definition and standard conventions of the form with a delicious convergence of pop culture ephemera." Grade A.

Against Acedia: "A word of warning: it’s verrrry British. But it’s also the finest issue yet from a tandem that seems to get better every issue."

(I especially like the caption to the first image. Yes, Emily. Don't. Also, analysis of one of the panel's bodylanguage, which highlights some of the stuff I love about working with Jamie. He's subtle enough to actually get that kind of detail across.

Er... let's hope he doesn't read this thread. He doesn't need any more ego tickling.)

More reviews! Ever more reviews!

Greg Burgas, Comics Should Be Good: "Oh, Phonogram. How can I be in the least bit objective about you, you wonderful slab of gorgeous pop comics?"

Hannibal Tabu, The Buy Pile: " Gorgeously designed, intricately presented and wonderfully wicked."

Things I Like: "A very good title, and it's starting to look like it's getting itself back on to some sort of regular schedule."

Oh - and Blair of G4 does Phonogram in her Fresh Ink Online. Hurrah for Blair!

That one panel analysis thing is wonderfully good. Time to go back and reappreciate!
(Also the description of Kohl's dancing is worryingly similar to my own stylez.)

Joey Pangilinan, SF Comics Examiner: "Gillen’s writing is equal parts sweet and deliciously wicked, and McKelvie’s art in the Singles Club has only gotten better since Rue Britannia. What’s more, is issue three’s cover is wonderfully designed. Then there’s Matthew Wilson’s lush coloring, which has made the art fly even higher in this second series. Together, all of these things make for a really good comic book worth picking up. This issue particularly."

Kyle Garret, Comics Bulletin: "I’d be shocked if anyone reading this review isn’t already a fan of Phonogram. On the off chance you aren’t, you should really give this book a shot. And if you’re already on the bandwagon, you should consider it your sacred duty to spread the word. This book is too good to remain a cult hit."

Paul O'Brian, If Destroyed Still True: "Great work from Jamie McKelvie, too - the body language is spot on, the final panel brilliant."

Stefan, But Before I Kill You: "Picked this up because I loved Beta Ray Bill: Godhunter last week. This is what Kieron Gillen is known for, and I was assured that it was very good. And, by the death rays, it's eye-poppingly excellent."

Scott Cederlund, The Secret of Wednesday's Haul: "Maybe it’s all in the way that a piece of music or a song will take you back to that one moment in time or that one emotion that you felt that’s tied into someone special. Gillen and McKelvie are creating comics that are like those songs, touching the open emotional nerves that cut straight through to the heart of the reader."

And a late 'un.

Bobsy, Mindless Ones: "Phonogram 2.3 is the best single yet off an album that’s becoming more interesting, exciting and essential with each issue. "
