Just de-lurking a bit and wondering... Does this mean the book is officially on hiatus? Or Cancelled? Thanks for looking....

Good to see I'm not the only one who noticed this.

Perhaps it's been locked or temporarily taken down for modifying or fixing/recoding? Hopefully it isn't a worst case scenario.

I believe Ant has left the building.

Seriously?
Whatever happened to the big announcement of the new writer, and how there were big things to come in Ant...if I remember correctly (which I probably don't, as I don't follow Ant at all) stuff that spanned the "Image Universe"?

Those must have left the building, too.

I don't know the deal, either...
but I'm just going with the flow that Clay has started....

But on a serious note:
That was rather sudden, and I also recall those announcements.
Not to mention Ant is in the middle of a story arc.
Seems unlikely he'd up and leave without saying anything.
Gully always spoke his mind.

His sticky thread on CBR / Image is still active as of this post.
Perhaps you guys can pin him down over there.

ANT has been canceled.

ANT #11 is the last Image issue.

As to what happened--it was a mutual parting of the ways.

The book was chronically late and sales were in free-fall because of that. The sales were so low that nobody was making any money on it and Mario has a family to feed so he had to take work elsewhere. We'd talked about doing a final issue here to wrap things up but it never came together. I even plotted out an ending and drew layouts in an effort to give the book some closure but with the book generating zero income and Mario working elsewhere--it just wasn't to be.

Ah well.

It was a book that I thought had potential--but without it coming out on a regular basis and without it improving--that potential could not be realized. We talked about numerous options to try and turn it around but all of them hinged on the book actually being worked on and that didn't seem likely to happen any time soon. Rather than drag it out over a few years and have it frustrate everybody--we decided to put a fork in it.

It's done.

I really did everything I could with this one. I lined up guest stars and drew cover sketches and helped find people to pitch in. I wanted this to work. I didn't think it was a strong book when it was at Arcana but Mario assured me that he could do the book and get it out monthly and that he was willing to listen and learn. I tried--really, I did--and I think it was a better book than it had been when it was at Image--but it was never as good as I thought it should be and a lot of my efforts were for naught.

It was a pretty frustrating experience.

If ANT continues, it will be with another publisher. I wish Mario and his family nothing but the best. There are no hard feelings here. He had to do what he had to do.

So there you go.

I don't know if he'd appreciate me posting it here, but it's just news, so..shouldn't be a big deal.

I took Jimmie's advice, and asked over at the cbr forums:

Mario Gully wrote:

Here's the deal.

I've decided to end the Ant series at Image. For a number of reasons. But, the important thing is that we are doing a brand new Ant series under the Big City Banner.. an no holds barred Ant series. love it or leave it type of thing. Myself and my partner Jeff Kaufman decided to run run our own show. The new Ant series is already underway. It's written by yours truly and penciled by a new talent that is great. Big things are going on for Ant.

I'm busy at Marvel doing my thing penciling and never been happier. Right now, I'm doing Marvel Illustrated: Treasure Island! If you guys care to know what I'm up next to go to Marvel.com and click my name under "pencilers.or myspace/MarioGully or the blog at Bigcity.

I remember buying the Ant trade and #7 (because it was some controversial issue at the time) and was interested and the 1992 storyline but it is a shame it ended up this way. Erik seems entirely genuine in wanting it to work out. As for Ant at a new publisher, went to that website and all I saw was some Kel Insurance Company????

I couldn't have been less interested in Ant until the 1992 storyline was announced, and then I was actually excited about the title and looking forward to checking it out. When that whole thing imploded (after it had already been solicited, even), plus some preview pages of an issue were posted on CBR that were completely riddled with typos, I completely wrote the book off. It's a shame....it COULD have been good, and it sounds like every effort was made to try to get it to live up to its potential, but I guess it was all for naught.

The 1992 storyline was the one supposed to be written by Joe Keatinge, right ? Or am I confusing it with something else ?
