Portent #4

Fourth and final part of the first run. Cover has just been solicited so I'm guessing it's ok to show it now. It's not a typical crowd pleaser as far as covers go, but I figured, that if you haven't jumped on board before now, you probably won't with the last issue so I went out on a limb and did something more "somber". That said, if you can get your hands on 1-3 and buy it for a friend, by all means do so, I need better numbers =).
Hope you like it!
Cheers

NIGHT TRIPPERS Interview and Flashback

I recently did an interview at wordballoon.com, then John (the host) let me futz with it. It's completely nuts now, full of music and sound effects. Totally fab, gear, happening, far out and groovy. Give it a listen, if you can handle having your freakin' mind blown!

THE STAKE - Ever popular, this weapon of choice was invented in the 16th century by monks living in the Carpathian Mountains near Transylvania. It has been said that there's nothing more comforting on a cold winters night than sitting by an open fire while whittling an oak post to a piercing point. A well carved spike, along with a necklace of garlic cloves, and a house filled with religious icons has been known to keep a young virgin unspoiled* well beyond her marrying years.
NOTE: The stake is not recommended for picking teeth or clearing toejam.
*By "unspoiled" we mean free of all supernatural and vampiric influence. Virgins wearing a Catholic schoolgirl uniform or tempting a suitor with a garlic heavy, romantic repast may fall victim to an altogether different form of "spoiling".
HOLY WATER - The vampire slaying order of Catholic priests known as S.E.C.T.T. (Secret Ecumenical Counter Terrorism Team) were the first to discover the corrosive, flesh searing benefits of using this blessed liquid in their battle against the evil dead. Though rarely a means of eradication, it has been frequently used by slayers seeking to divert the attentions of the unholy enemy. Nine-out-of-ten vampires agree that holy water not only leaves unsightly scars, but stings like a mutha.
FIRE - According to the newly revised version of Malleus Malificarum, vampires are the consistency of very dry kindling. WARNING: Desiccated preternatural creatures are highly combustible. Always use caution when igniting the living dead. Flame retardant clothing is recommended.
DECAPITATION WEAPONRY - Once the head of a vampire has been removed from its body, it is no longer a threat. However, a demonically possessed severed head absolutely must be separated from its body at all times. It is recommended that the head be contained, preferably in a chained and locked metal box. Failure to take such action will enable the head to reunite with its body and regenerate.
Just about any metal blade can be used to achieve the desired dismemberment. An ax, sword, scimitar or a saber is preferred, but a less formal weapon such as chain-saw can also be effective.
EXCALIBUR - This enchanted sword is legendary. It was forged by an unknown supernatural force during the reign of King Arthur Pendragon of Camelot and can not only be used to lop off the head of a vampire, but also has the ability to obliterate their dark hearts with much the same effect as a wooden stake. Did I mention that it cuts perfect julienne fries every time? AND for a limited time (eternities end), this sword also comes with a map showing the sacred location of the holy grail along with a Chef's hat that boasts the silk-screened slogan "It's good to be the King!". But that's not all--if you act now, you'll receive a chain mail tunic (one size fits all) and a magical paring knife.
These are just a few ways to rid oneself of the creatures of the night. I hope they prove helpful. For further information, refer to the NIGHT TRIPPERS GN (ISBN: 1582406065) which ships May 31 with a retail price of $16.99.
And if you'd like to add to your Night Trippers experience, the creators of this graphic novel (Ricketts and Farritor) along with rock band Epicycle have created mp3 audio files of NT-related original music and more. It’s available for free download at "THE NIGHT TRIPPERS SITE" or at iTunes.

Phonograrmy
Starting with an image, as it's a long post and pages of text look really boring.
You may have seen the B-side McKelvie and I released to introduce our Phonogram to the world. Many people have linked to it and passed it around, and this makes us happy. It's a strange emotion, we're both unfamiliar with but are enjoying it. It's a little like being drunk, but cheaper and you look prettier in the morning. We recommend it heartily.
However we're not happy with our tyranny of a domain that purely exists in 1s and 0s in the mind of a pre-sentient AI in Hamburg.
To that end, I returned from my local printer yesterday with a couple of surprisingly-heavy boxes full of postcards advertising Phonogram, each one sporting the B-side strip. Now we want to get them into the hands of people.
This is where you come in.
While we're planning to get the postcards to local comic shops directly, for our initial sending out we’d like to stay true to our punky fanzine roots and get other humans involved.
Basically, do you have a local comic shop you enter regularly? Would you be willing to take a small pile of these lovely objects d'art in and ask the proprietor to have on the counter? Do you wish to join arms in a grand fraternity of Phonogam and chant to our dark and nameless Gods?
If the answers to all of the above are yes, drop me a line at Kieron dot Gillen at Gmail dot com and I'll get the little parcel in the post to you.
Exceptions: Since I'm based around Bath and Bristol and Jamie's based in London, we've got those particular areas covered. Though if you live there and want to drop us a line anyway, don't let that stop you. We like e-mail. It makes us happy, which is a little like being dru... have I mentioned that?
And before we leave, now would be a good time to mention the Media page we've just set up on the website, which includes some terribly high resolution files suitable for printing out, having blu-tack pushed onto the back and turned into some manner of poster for the better class of vertical surface.
Phonogram: Covering awkward cracks and patches of damp on walls since May 2006.
Thanks for listening.

Future Shock-Invincible
Free Comic Book Day was quite cool, it was great to see everyones contribution in it. The Invincible part was tons of fun to do, I love Allen the Alien and drawing him busting outta of his big hospital bed was fun because he's been out of it for a while. Here is the pencils and inks to the first two pages. The pencils I keep rough, I add and tighten things up when I ink it. So there.
