The Battle Hymn that never was

More BATTLE HYMN tidbits that didn't make the trade. The original artist on the project was Toby Cypress, as the book went from being called WATCHGUARD to ANTHEM and finally to BATTLE HYMN when Jeremy Haun came on board.

Here are some of Toby's sketches of the Proud American (based on my original design) and an early version of the Artificial Man.

The Dreaded Wings: Behind the Scenes with Runes of Ragnan

So, the evolution of a character...

It's a funny thing (sometimes).

The first incarnation of Eldjarn...he had these "wings" on his helm...it was meant to be distinctive, make him appear more "good" and yada yada blah blah bisquit.

Turns out, it only made him look bisexual. Not that there is anything wrong with that...it's just not what we were shooting for :)

So after some discussion, Josh and I decided to drop the wings, and BAM!!!! Eldjarn became exactly what we wanted. Everything he needed to represent suddenly came through.

For your enjoyment, here is a look at Eldjarn WITH his funny lil' wings:

And of course, Eldjarn evolved:

ARTIST BATTLES

this is an idea i'd like to see stolen from jim lee's blog... who would be into some sketch battles between the current IMAGE artists? the readers vote, in the comments section, for the king of the hill.

Noble Causes - what might have been

Hey, guys! Jay Faerber here, writer of a little book called Noble Causes. This is my first post to the Image blog, and I thought I'd start off by showing you a never-before-seen piece of Noble Causes art. A couple years ago I was on the hunt for a new artist to take over the book, which were preparing to relaunch as an ongoing, monthly series. One of the guys I looked at was some kid named Ryan Ottley.

He had some amazing samples, and even worked up these killer sketches of some of the Nobles. Ultimately, Ryan went onto take over Invincible and I landed Fran Bueno on Noble Causes. Talk about a win/win situation!

Ever since then I've been able to get my monthly dose of "Unca Wya" goodness in each issue of Invincible, while being lucky enough to have Fran Bueno's art grace the pages of Noble Causes.

I've got some other Noble Causes treasures lying around, and one day soon I'll post some more.

ARTIST EXERCISE: ShadowHawk #8 - Two Script Pages

Hey all,

In a thread on the Shadowline forums, a poster mentioned he was planning to do a couple of ShadowHawk pages for fun. I figured I'd help him out by providing a couple of script pages to draw from. But hey, if you're so inclined, feel free to do them yourself as well!

These two pages are from ShadowHawk #8, which is due out in the next couple of weeks.

For more information, check out the link below.

PAGE FIFTEEN - (6 Panels)

PANEL 1
Philip is in the foreground, his back to the camera, facing SH who is in the background. Philip sends a column of flame toward SH again, who does a backflip to dodge.

SFX
FWOOSH!

PHILIP
It was the only way anyone would pay for what they've done to me.

PHILIP
Now, leave me alone, so I can finish what I started!

PANEL 2
Tight on Philip's face as SH's fist strikes from the top right corner of the panel.

SFX
WAK!

SHADOWHAWK
Come on, you know that's not gonna happen.

PANEL 3
Flip the angle on Panel 1, bringing SH into the foreground, his back to the camera, facing Philip in the background. Philip sends another column of flame toward SH, who dodges Van Damme-style by doing the air splits.

PHILIP
GRRAH!

SFX
FWOOSH!

PANEL 4
Similar to Panel 2, but flip the angle so SH's fist is coming from the top left corner of the panel.

SFX
SMAK!

SHADOWHAWK
Dodge, hit, dodge, hit. I can keep this up until I knock you out.

PANEL 5
SH crouches Spidey-style in the foreground (maybe one hand on the ground for balance, legs outstretched?), his back to the camera. Philip is in the background looking toward the camera (and SH), angry and grabbing his jaw.

SHADOWHAWK
Wouldn't you rather be conscious when I...

PANEL 6
Worm's-eye view from just over the edge of the roof where SH was standing. Philip is tackling SH over the side, surprising our hero.

PHILIP
Shut up!

SHADOWHAWK
Whoa!

PAGE SIXTEEN - (5 Panels)

PANEL 1
The two of them tumbling toward the street below (they're not even close yet, though). Philip looks quite surprised and frightened. He didn't mean to tackle SH over the side of the building.

PHILIP
Oh-oh no!

PSH (CAP)
EDDIE! Hook line, quickly! Toward the highest spot you can see!

PANEL 2
SH fires a hook line into the air. Philip still looks frightened, and grabs onto SH, who grimaces in pain. Philip's hot, y'know.

SFX
Thsssss!

PHILIP
Don't...don't let me go!

SHADOWHAWK
AAAAGH!

PANEL 3
SH is now swinging on the line. Philip has him in a sort of bear hug, scared out of his mind. It's difficult for SH to swing like this because he not only has a person hanging onto him, but that person is on fire. If possible, dot the background with the river. This is where they're heading.

PSH (CAP)
I know you're in pain, Eddie. Hang on a little longer. Drop him in the river. It's the best way to end this.

SHADOWHAWK
I...

PANEL 4
Bird's-eye view. Not more than maybe five or six feet above a rooftop close to the river, SH drops Philip toward the roof. SH's hook line dissipates behind him as he does. Make sure you include one of those wooden NY water towers on this rooftop.

SHADOWHAWK
I can't.

PANEL 5
Roof level. Philip falls clumsily onto the roof right by the water tower. SH tumbles a bit more gracefully maybe ten feet away or so.

NO TEXT.

Portent page #14

Here's a tiny look at page 14 without words. Issue #1 is just about done, save for some editing on my part and then it's over to the next. So I guess this is the last preview before issue 2.

Meet Lin

Here's a frame from Portent #1. I thought I'd take this opportunity to introduce on of the major characters since she hasn't really made an appearance in the 8 pages that are already out on the net from the first issue. So, this is Lin, who, together with Alkuin and Milo are the three main protagonists in the story and issue #2 will see much more of her as she begins to take charge. She's not your typical warrior-babe and the conflict between the would-be-hero Milo and her sincere intentions to set things right will drive much of the story, beginning in the next issue. Please stop by The Portent.com for more information. I've promised to upload the next cover soon, and that is coming later this week.

Bad Planet #4 black and white

This is the recently finished line illustration to Bad Planet #4 featuring our main character "The Convict".
I'm very new to the blog so I hope I can figure out how to post the graphic correctly.

Anyway, the finished painting will have a crosshairs and targeting array fixed over the Convict's right eye along with Grant Goleash's incredible colors. I hope to post the finished piece here in the next day or so.

I'm very excited to be in such excellent company with the Bad Planet covers. It's no easy task to follow Mark Schultz but it feels real nice to be sandwiched in between Mark and Michael Kaluta. We hope to be showing off Michael's cover sometime in the next 3 weeks and we're all on pins and needles to see what Dave Stevens has in store for us on issue 6. Exciting times.

IMAGE COMICS HOLIDAY SPECIAL Animated Prequel

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Hey folks,

I've got an 8-page G-Man story that's going to appear in the IMAGE COMICS HOLIDAY SPECIAL which should be out this Wednesday.

It takes place after the events of a Christmas COMIC BITS strip that appeared in SAVAGE DRAGON #106. In anticipation of the holiday special, I've animated that strip HERE.

Check it out!
